The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) celebrates its 49th founding anniversary today amid an extended martial rule across Mindanao and intensified military operations across the country.

With respective unilateral ceasefire declarations by the CPP-led New People’s Army (NPA), Department of National Defense, and President Rodrigo Duterte in place, however, the revolutionary army’s formation across the country are expected to hold mass gatherings with supporters in their controlled territories.

Various NPA commands as well as the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) in northeast Mindanao have issued statements on the CPP’s anniversary.

“The National Democratic Front of the Philippines-North Eastern Mindanao Region joins all revolutionary forces in the region in joyful celebration of the 49th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). On this occasion we proudly salute the outstanding leadership of the CPP of the Philippine revolution,” the NDFP-North East Mindanao Region’s statement said.

In summing up its 2017 campaigns, NDFP-NEMR said it has launched 180 military actions and claimed 147 kills against government troops, “in defense and as counter-attacks against government troop offensives and to sanction companies that did not respect the people’s government and were destroying the environment and livelihood of the people.”

In these military actions, NDFP-NEMR said the NPA in the region seized enough weapons to equip a new platoon while suffering 11 casualties throughout the year.

Panay Island’s Coronacion Chiva Command said operations launched by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) last month caused the death of three NPA martyrs.

But the NPA in the region launched five attacks that killed four and injured 16 government troopers, it said.

The NPA in Kalinga for its part expressed gratitude to the mass support to their armed struggle, “in defense against anti-people economic policies and human rights violations” of the Duterte government.

Founded in Alaminos, Pangasinan by a handful of young revolutionaries led by Jose Maria Sison in December 26, 1968, the CPP has led one of the longest-running Maoist armed struggles in the world.
